Ready-Set-Read!

We apologize if there has been any confusion regarding our Reading Program. Last week parents received a green letter with Reading Program information. Unfortunately, there was a typo and we want to set the record straight.

The correct reading minute goals are: K-3rd grade 20 min/day, 5 days a week (400 min /month) and  4th-6th grade 30 minutes/day, 5 days a week (600 min/month).  If students meet these goals, they can win a prize.  If they do not meet these goals but have read and turned in their reading minute calendar, they will be eligible for reading parties and drawings.

Megan (our Reading Program Coordinator) is looking for book suggestions for all ages.  She will use these book suggestions as she purchases books for the reading drawings.  Megan is looking for entertaining, clean books for all ages from Kindergarten through 6th grade.  If you have any suggestions, please email her at   megan.crandall@hotmail.com

Thank you!  Southland PTO

How Many Miles Did We Run?

Schedule
Want to win a pair of tickets to a Real Soccer game? The person who comes closest to guessing the total number of miles our school ran at the Jog-A-Thon will win a pair of tickets to an October Real Soccer game! (Games are Oct 1st and Oct 5th)
Here are a couple of clues:
1. Each track was a tenth of a mile.
2. Each student ran for 20 minutes.
3. Over 800 Students and Faculty participated.
On Facebook, we have had several guesses.  One person is within 10 miles of the correct answer.  Here are the guesses so far:
1519 1470 1450 1621 1704 2000 1481 1550 1902 1823 1875 1536 1795 1645 1583 1973 1885 1685

We will take your guesses until Monday unless someone guesses the exact number before. Each member of your family can make a guess. Good Luck!

Jog-a-Thon Update

Our Jog-a-Thon is this Wednesday!
We've been watching the weather very close which lead to long measuring tapes and PTO moms running inside the school today :)  If we end up with a rainy day, we have a great back up plan which involves a slightly altered schedule and children running in the halls!  Watch for details to come tomorrow in your children's backpacks and an email from the school with our "Downpour Schedule" Let's hope the weatherman is wrong so we can run outside and keep our schedule as planned.

The Scoop on the Proposed Bond

November 5th is quickly approaching and we want you to be as informed as possible about the proposed Jordan School District bond. This bond, if passed, will not only pay for new schools to be built, but also air conditioning and safety upgrades for all our schools. There is a great information site that should help answer most of your questions--click here to learn more.

The growth in our District has been huge, and it will continue due to the residential building that is quickly happening in our cities. If the bond doesn't pass the alternative ideas include year around school for elementary and middle schools, more portables, pocket busing, boundary changes and a split school schedule where some students will attend from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m and others from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. (this is an example not the actual schedule times.) If the bond is passed, these are alternative ideas which the District leaders will have to choose from to handle the current issues facing us.

How much will it cost you? $10/ $100,000 of your home's value. If you live in a home with a value of $250,000 you will pay $25 more each month or $300 a year. While most of us are not looking forward to an increase, the bond will provide a lot of necessities, enabling our students to get the best education possible at our schools.

Mike Anderson from the District will also be attending our October 4th PTO meeting. The meeting starts at 9:15 a.m. in the faculty room. Please plan on attending if you have questions. There are also many local meetings that the District is holding to help voters understand the bond.

Tomorrow, Friday September 13th is the last day to order Southland Spirit shirts. Order online at: http://www.mojoprinting.com/southland or by sending your order form to your student's teacher. Every Friday will be Spirit Day, when students are encouraged to wear their Southland Shirts and boost our school spirit. Sample shirts and sweatshirts of every style are available to try on in the office. Sizes for the women's cut shirts have changed this year so be sure to try them on.

We are in need of a room parent for Mrs. Edwards 4th grade class
and a Co-Parent for Mrs. Nielsen's 6th grade class. Email southlandpto@gmail.com if you can help.

Watch for information to come home next week about our upcoming Jog-A-Thon Fundraiser. We will be having a kick off assembly on Wednesday, Sept 18th and will send home packets for students to collect donations from family and friends. Please emphasize to your children, we do not want them to go door to door, only ask people they know.

Our Jog-A-Thon will be held throughout the day on September 25th at our school. Classes will have 20 minutes each on a tenth of a mile track to run/walk as many laps as they would like. Parents are encouraged to come and cheer for their students. A schedule will be distributed to parents next week.

Packets are due back to the school on Friday, September 27th for our Early Bird deadline or October 1st for the final packet return date.

Next week will be Green Ribbon week. To celebrate, we will hold walk to school day on Wednesday, September 18th.
